New Biomedical Science Course Offered

Emily Newman

Principles of Biomedical Science is a new course being offered to Case high school students as part of the Project Lead the Way program. It offers a different view than the average science class. It's a hands on, critical thinking course with an interesting atmosphere.

Principles of Biomedical Science is the introductory course of the PLTW Biomedical Science Program, in which students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a fictional person named Anna Garcia. While investigating the case, students are exposed to a variety of biomedical professional as they examine autopsy reports, medical histories, and learn of and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged Anna's life.

“I find this class more hands on compared to previous science classes I’ve had in the past. ”, said Emily .

Principles of Biomedical Science is important because it provides students a different approach to learning science and exposure to what it's like to be a biomedical professional. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and professional research. While allowing them to design their own experiments to solve problems, it also provides exposure to many biomedical careers helping students frame their interests and plan for their studies post high school.

This class provides a rather non-traditional approach to learning where students collaborate with their classmates to design experiments to solve problems such as the mysterious case of Anna Garcia. Throughout this process, students will learn about different biomedical careers, human physiology, biology, laboratory techniques, and medicine as it is applied to the case of Anna Garcia.

“The teacher is really good at explaining the tasks and assignments she assigns and makes sure her students has a clear understanding.”, said Meghan.

It is a science elective (1 credit). This class cannot be taken in place of core science credits. If a student scores a 7, 8, or 9 out of 9 on the the end of year test, he/she will earn a C, B, or A in equivalent college science course credits.

All grade levels (9-12) may take pnb principles of biomedical science. The next class in the biomedical science pathway is Human Body Systems, which may be taken concurrently with

Principles of Biomedical Science. Next year, the third PLTW biomedical science class, Medical Interventions, will be offered to those who have completed Human Body Systems. Students must have either earned a B or better in biology or must be concurrently enrolled in biology.
