Case Wrestling Team

On Thursday December 1st, the Case wrestling team competed in their first meet at Franklin. It was a close meet and while the Eagles fought valiantly Franklin won the meet by two points, the score was 33-36.

ā€œThe meet went well, even though we lost by three points, we really wanted to win against Franklin, but we tried our best, and we’ll get them next timeā€, said wrestler Ole Cervantes.

Even though Case may not have won the meet there were some great moments for Dwayne Ford, Luther Emerson, and Timmy Rothen. These competitors had some good pins against Franklin which definitely helped Cast stay neck and neck with Franklin.

To prepare for this meet, Coach Dave Edwards, has the wrestling team go through many obstacles to make sure they are in shape and ready to compete. To be on the wrestling team you have to show up for practice and be committed to the team and sport.

Wrestlers are required to be very hydrated during the season for good health, a for number of reasons.

ā€œI drank almost two gallons of water the day of the hydration testā€, said Ole Cervantes.

Before wrestlers compete in a meet they are required to make weight, which entails being the correct weight to compete in a certain weight class. If someone is overweight and they need to drop pounds they may run during practice to burn off the fat.

Just running does not always cut it, sometimes wrestlers will run with winter coats on to sweat off the weight. For wrestlers it is recommended to fast before meets so they do not gain more weight.

Usually most people do not eat any large meals, only small snacks is necessary. Being hungry can also get them the extra edge during a meet to pin someone.

Competitors are weighed officially for a meet, and they are over or under there team is deducted six points, which could make or break a meet. A lot goes into preparing for a meet, but for wrestlers it is worth it in the long run.
