Martin Luther King Day
Emily Newman
Every year RUSD is given Martin Luther King day off as a day of reflection and to celebrate the life and achievements MLK made. Which was his influential American civil rights leader.
Many students have been taught the importance MLK had for our civil rights and the equality of everyone in America, but many fail to realize and remember the importance he really had on our society.
“MLK day is important for RUSD to recognize. But it's important that individuals are educated on what the day really means. They participate in events that help educate and portray his dream.”, said Ms. Cassie.
As a district, students celebrate and enrich the importance of what he stood for in order to help inform and educate other students who don't know. Every year rusd participates in community services acts in order to give back. Over the year students are given the opportunity to eat a free hot lunch as well as interact with other students to learn about MLK and how we can correlate his beliefs and practices in our everyday lives.
“ Without MLK, we wouldn't be able to attend the school we wanted too and we wouldn’t be able to have the diverse friendships we can have today.”, A junior named Kianna had said.
Fortunately living in Racine we have the ability to grow up in a diverse community. Which shows us different cultures and different ways of thinking. With that being said Martin Luther king is a key influence to our advancements we have today.
“Without having MLK we wouldn’t have been given the opportunity at equality and Case wouldn’t be like it was today.”, Coach WOP.
Because of him we have the ability to attend school where everyone has an equal opportunity to get an education and better themselves for their future. As a community we are working to help restore and maintain MLK’s dream. And that his day doesn’t go unrecognized.
After interviewing Case staff, the main thought was, having gratitude to MLK and the individuals that help fight in order to make his dream a reality. Which was that different races and cultures were treated with the respect they deserve and having the opportunities at a prospering future.
