The Structure Behind In My Bones

On April 7th through the 9th, the Eagle Theater put on another Justice Social called, In My Bones.

The Justice Social itself, something Eagle Theater has been doing since 2013, is meant to raise awareness of social issues in the community. The show itself is to not only make audience members aware of problems that may affect them, but get them inspired to do something about it.

“This show like many others has a lot of information people may not be aware of. Stepping into issues like human trafficking and abuse is something we haven't done before. We hear about it, but don't necessarily know what it is,” said student Hannah Mccartney.

In this year’s Justice Social, In My Bones touches on a problem that dramatically affects the state of Wisconsin, human trafficking. While doing research on the show director Nancy Gibson was shocked to find the Milwaukee is one of the top cities for human trafficking in the United States. Human trafficking is a serious issue, and to not be aware that a city 28 miles away from Case High School is a center of human trafficking is concerning, and downright dangerous.

Not only are issues like human trafficking touched on in the play, but divorce, substance, abuse, and domestic violence are also presented. A large part as to why this show is so moving is because some of the events that happen are based on writings of actual students and what they have gone through.

“In My Bones is a quote taken from one of my student’s writings about their life,” said Gibson.

Heavy issues like these are what make the Justice Social so hard to make, because is takes a toll on everyone.

“This show is hard to make, its dynamic, is hard on actors, and audience members,” said Gibson.

According to Gibson this show is difficult for people to go see because it is hard for them to watch something that can make them sad. The Justice Social does not always get the turn out it deserves because of this. Either way the students that participate in the show are dedicated to their message, even if they just performed for one person that would be one person they changed.
