Case High School has a wide variety of classes ranging from IB to AP, along with unique electives. Case High School is also part of the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) program, which is where many unique activities are done.
In the PLTW class called BioMedical Science, the class got to do a lab called Gram Staining, a very amazing opportunity.
Usually performing a Gram stain test happens at a college level, but the Bio-Medical students are always presented with great medical training opportunities day after day in the class.
The students prepared for the Gram stain with extensive notes and videos to ensure the best outcome. The students also practiced the process with a pencil and paper. It is important that the procedure is done perfectly, which can be very difficult.
The students learned that when working with bacteria in the Gram staining process, the bacteria and other materials can not be exposed to anything, not even air.
“We swiped the bacteria onto the slide, and the most difficult thing was the fact that we could not expose it to that much oxygen. We had to keep the lid of the slide as close to closed as possible. If too much air came in contact with it, it could ruin the whole lab. We weren't even allowed to put our materials down.”
Performing this experiment prepared all the students going into the medical field for their future college courses.
“I plan on going into the Biomedical field, so knowing this is not usually done until the college level puts me at a really great advantage.”
Case High School is always offering great courses, classes, programs, and opportunities for their students. Labs can be both fun and be putting students at a great advantage, so make sure you're signing up for as many great classes as you can for next year!
