A 64-year-old Nevada resident fired out of his hotel room on the 32nd floor into a crowd of people at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on October 1. The suspected shooter’s name is Stephen Paddock.
Paddock checked in to the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on Thursday, September 18. On Sunday at about 10:08, Paddock opened fire into a large crowd of people at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas. He killed 58 people and injured more than 500. He soon after turned the gun on himself. When authorities stormed his room, they found him dead with a pistol lying near him. Late Thursday night, the Clark County Coroner’s office released the names of the 58 victims killed in the attack. They included 36 women and 22 men. The oldest was 67, the youngest 20. Police say he fired for 9 to 11 minutes after the first 911 call. This was the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.
The police that are investigating this tragedy have identified 47 firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition belonging to Mr. Paddock, including many that he bought in past months.
Paddock had a girlfriend at the time named Marilou Danley. Danley said Paddock bought her a ticket about two weeks ago to visit her family in the Philippines and then wired money to purchase a home for Danley and her family. When she arrived back in the US, She was met by FBI agents at the airport and questioned Wednesday. After being questioned, Danley said in a statement that she had no clue about his plans to carry out the massacre and pledged to cooperate with authorities struggling to determine what sparked the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. Detectives believe she has no ties with the shooting.
Paddock’s father’s story may provide some information for detectives on why the shooting took place. The father of Stephen Paddock was a grifter, a con artist, a bank robber and a jail-breaker who spent years on the F.B.I.’s most-wanted list, a life nothing like the 64 years Stephen spent without apparently acquiring even a hint of a police record. In 1960, when Stephen Paddock was 7, F.B.I. agents showed up at his family’s ranch house in the hills outside Tucson, Arizona, stunning the neighbors and even the local sheriff. No one could believe that Pat Paddock, the father of four young boys who owned a small business in town and was a special deputy at the sheriff’s office, was really Benjamin Hoskins Paddock, a serial bank robber with a rap sheet that stretched back to Chicago. There was only one thing these two had in common: a skill at concealing their criminal plans so carefully that they seemed to materialize from nowhere.
This event will forever be remembered as a tragedy. This incident was the deadliest shooting in US history.
This as a map of the area around where the gunman shot from. The gunman had a clear view of the Route 91 Harvest Festival and he opened fire on the crowd of people at the Route 91 Harvest Festival from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. People inside builds nearby, such as The Luxor Hotel, were not able to go outside.
