Racine's New Mayor

Racine has a new mayor, and with it, new opportunities to grow and develop. Corey Mason won Racine’s race for mayor.

Corey Mason was running for mayor as a democrat. Mason was the first to declare his candidacy. He announced his intentions at the same news conference at which former Mayor Dickert announced his resignation. Before the primary, he was running against five others: Austin Rodriguez, Wally Rendon, Sandy Weidner, Fabian Maldonado, and Melvin Hargrove. After the mayoral primary, the candidates were narrowed down to Corey Mason and Sandy Weidner, with Mason coming out victorious.

The final voting results ended with Mason with 5,356 votes and Weidner with 4,392 votes. Mason won by about a 10% percent margin. He addressed his supporters at his victory party downtown. He will be sworn in on November 7th.

Mason will serve for the rest of John Dickert’s term, which is 18 more months. He has been in the state legislature for 11 years, two in majority and nine in minority. Mason will be leaving his position as a state representative to take on role as the mayor. Sandy Weidner is not going to run for mayor or her alderman seat again.

Mason wants to make Racine a better place, and he has many ideas on how to do that. He will work on protecting the Lake Michigan and Root River areas. He also wants to increase conservation and renewable energy use. Mason wants to connect Racine to the interstate and use light rail to connect Racine to jobs in our region. Mason will strive to promote economic development, which will help rebuild the middle class. He will work on developing Racine, like the Machinery Row Riverfront Redevelopment. Mason stands in opposition to the arena and the hotel complex, and he believes it will not benefit Racine.

Racine is going down a new path in its growth and development. Throughout Mason’s term, we will see if Racine benefits from him or not.
