Fire at Trump Tower

One resident was killed in his home on the 50th floor of Trump Tower after a fire broke out in the New York City building on Saturday, April 8.

Todd Brassner, 67, was unresponsive when he was pulled out of the building by firefighters. Brassner was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died. Six firefighters were injured, but their injuries were not life threatening.

The residential floors of the 58-story building do not have sprinklers installed. Trump tower does have a building-wide fire alarm system that notified FDNY of the location of the fire, including the specific floor.

These common alarm systems are not audible to all floors of the building to prevent crowding and overflow of people in staircases. This leaves room for firefighters rushing to the scene. When the President is in his penthouse in the NYC building, an “alarm assignment team” is present.

Brassner bought the $2.5 million apartment in 1996 but recently grew unhappy and angry with his home. Brassner disliked Trump and had many medical and financial challenges.

Brassner had a large collection of art pieces and hundreds of guitars and ukuleles in his home. One of Brassner’s most prized art pieces was a portrait of himself painted by Andy Warhol.

After the fire was put out, Trump congratulated firefighters in a Tweet. Trump said, “Fire at Trump Tower is out. Very confined (well built building). Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!”. This Tweet was posted before the news of Brassner’s death.

No members of the Trump family were in the building at the time of the fire.

Pouring Flames- Flames and smoke poured from the windows of Trump tower in New York City. The fire was said to be caused by an electrical malfunction.
