Korea at Peace

North and South Korea agreed on April 27, 2018 to work to remove all nuclear weapons from the Korean Peninsula.

This is an important step between North and South Korea. There has been an uneasy truce between the two countries ever since the Korean War. Both leaders promised to formally end the Korean War, 65 years after hostilities ended in an armistice, and to seek the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.

Within the year, they want to pursue talks with the United States to declare an official end to the Korean War.

This is the first time a North Korean leader had ever set foot in the South since the war. A peace treaty has been one of the incentives North Korea has demanded in return for dismantling its nuclear program.

“South and North Korea confirmed the common goal of realizing, through complete denuclearization, a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula,” read a statement signed by North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, and the South’s president, Moon Jae-in.

South Korea is dismantling a bank of loudspeakers along its border, which for years have been used to blast propaganda and music, including K-Pop, into North Korea. North Korea has its own set of speakers along the heavily fortified border, which it's used to broadcast propaganda about Pyongyang, North Korea being a working paradise towards South Korea. Both Moon and Kim agreed to cease their audio battle as part of a declaration signed by the leaders.

President Trump and Mr. Kim have an upcoming summit. They want to talk about peace and avoiding a nuclear war.

This could help formally put an end to the Korean War.

The meeting between North and South Korea was a big step toward peaceful negotiations.

Handshake: North and South Korean leaders share a handshake to symbolize peace throughout Korea. The meeting was broadcasted, and many people tuned in to see how they would go.
