North Korean Prisoners released

President Trump declared on the morning of May 9 that three Americans who were held in North Korea are heading home. The three prisoners are on their way back to the US.

The Americans, Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak-song, and Kim Sang Duk, also known as Tony Kim, have been in North Korea for months. Kim Dong Chul has been in North Korea since before President Trump was in office. The other two were arrested last spring.

Kim Hak-song and Kim Sang Duk were arrested in April and May of 2017. They were arrested for conspiring against the Kim Jong Un regime. Kim Dong Chul was arrested in 2015 for spying on behalf of South Korea.

Trump tweeted that morning, "I am pleased to inform you that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in the air and on his way back from North Korea with the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting. They seem to be in good health." The three Americans seemed like they were not treated badly and hurt while in prison.

While Pompeo was in North Korea, he met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and set a date and place for their meeting.

"I had productive meetings in Pyongyang with Chairman Kim Jong-un and made progress. I'm delighted to bring home three Americans," Pompeo tweeted.

"We are very grateful for the release of our husband and father, Tony Kim, and the other two American detainees. We want to thank all of those who have worked toward and contributed to his return home. We also want to thank the President for engaging directly with North Korea. Mostly, we thank God for Tony's safe return," the family said Wednesday.
